The right adhesive or sealant depends on the joint. What is the difference between a threadlocker and a retaining compound?
A threadlocker cures inside a thread to stop nuts and bolts loosening under vibration. A retaining compound fills the gap between cylindrical parts, such as a bearing on a shaft, and holds them together.
Which threadlocker strength should I use?
Use low or medium strength for fasteners you will remove for maintenance, since they come apart with hand tools. High strength is for permanent assemblies and usually needs heat to undo.
Can I use an instant adhesive instead of an epoxy?
For small, close-fitting parts, yes. Instant adhesives do not fill gaps or carry much load, so use a two-part epoxy such as Araldite where the parts do not meet closely or the joint takes weight.
Which sealant should I use for joints that move?
Use a silicone or construction sealant from McCoy Soudal, Bostik or Anabond. They stay flexible after curing, so the seal holds as panels and frames expand and contract.
